Those of you that know my little sister Deena, probably also know that she was diagnosed with placenta p
revia about 5 weeks ago. First let me start by explaining placenta p
revia for those of you that don't know what it is. (taken from
mayoclinic.com)
Placenta previa is an uncommon pregnancy complication that can cause excessive bleeding before or during delivery. Early in pregnancy, the placenta may implant in the lower part of the uterus. As the uterus grows, the placenta usually moves up and away from the opening of the uterus (cervix). If it doesn't, the cervix may be blocked. This is known as placenta previa.
One of the biggest concerns with placenta previa is the risk of severe vaginal bleeding (hemorrhage) during labor, delivery or the first few hours after delivery. The bleeding can be heavy enough to cause maternal shock or even death.
Last Thursday, Deena gave us quite a scare! She began bleeding on Wednesday evening,
through the night & into Friday morning. Deena & Baby were examed & monitored at the hospital on Thursday morning. Deena's doctor, Dr. McKenzie, wasn't able to determine why Deena was bleeding. However, she was able to determine that Deena's placenta did not abrupt (break away from the
uterine wall), thank God!!! If Deena's placenta abrupts, the time frame for Deena to get to an ER so Baby can be delivered (via emergency c-section) is sooo small & so risky, pray to God that doesn't happen!!!
Aside from placenta previa, Deena's also contracting. Deena began taking tributaline (sp) to stop the contractions a week or so ago. Dr. McKenzie's hoping that with the tributaline, Deena will only have about 6 contractions an hour. While Deena was being monitored last Thursday morning, she had 8 contractions within 20 minutes, lasting 60-70 seconds each. Not good!!!
Each & every day that Baby grows inside the placenta is a BIG day for Deena & Baby! Some of you have asked if there's anything you can do to help, here's a few ideas....
Stop & see Deena - keep her company. Drop off a good book or movie. Bring her a snack or a meal. Anything to keep Deena content while she lays on the couch would be GREATLY appreciate by all! But most important, keep Deena & Baby in your prayers!!!
